Method 1. Stop The Windows Update Service

  • Open the Run command by hold win button and press R button(Win + R), now write the services.msc and press enter.

  • In the General tab, there is Startup Type option, open it and change it from automatic to disabled.

  • Now click on apply and ok, restart your system.

If you want to re-enable windows 10 update, follow these steps again and change the Startup Type from disabled to Automatic.

Method 2. Setup A Metered Connection

  • Open the setting app on your system by the press and hold win and I buttons(Win + I).
  • Open the “Network & Internet” section.
  • Open “Wi-Fi” and click “Advanced Options”.
  • Toggle “Set as metered connection” to “On”.

Method 3. Use Group Policy Editor

  • Open the Run command by hold win button and press R (Win + R). Now write the gpedit.msc command and press enter.
  • Go to the Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Update.
  • Open this and change the Configure Automatic Updates setting to “2 – Notify for download and notify for install”.
  • Open the Settings app on your system by hold Win button and press I button(Win + I) and navigate to Update and Security -> Windows Updates. Click “Check for updates” which applies the new configuration setting.
  • Now restart your system

Method 4. Download The Windows 10 Automatic Updates Troubleshooter

  • Download the “Show or hide update” troubleshooter package. Click Here
  • For Rummimg the troubleshooter, open wushowhide.diagcab and then follow the on-screen instructions in the troubleshooter to hide the problematic driver or update.

Method 5: Alternative to Group Policy Editor

  • Open the Run command on your system by hold win button and press R (Win + R) and write regedit and press enter.
  • Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU.
  • In there create a “32-bit DWORD” value called “AuOptions” and under “Value Data” type 2 and click “OK”.
  • Open the Settings app on your system by hold Win button and press I button (Win + I) and navigate to -> Update and Security -> Windows Updates. Click “Check for updates” which applies the new configuration setting.
  • Now restart your system.
